Small Business Resiliency Loan Helps Barber Shop Stay Sharp

Business: St. John’s Barber Shop

Credit Union Partner: Sound Credit Union

For years, John Takyi worked as a barber in other people’s shops while dreaming of one day opening a shop of his own. In 2012, he turned that dream into reality, opening the doors to St. John’s Barber Shop in Des Moines, Wash.

More than a decade later, John’s business has grown to include as many as eight barbers serving more than 100 customers each week. But maintaining that success requires ongoing investment. Two years ago, John knew it was time to upgrade the shop with new barber chairs, clippers, storage cabinets and other equipment.

A $10,000 Small Business Resiliency Loan (SBRL) provided the capital John needed to make those improvements and keep his business competitive. He credits his partners at Sound Credit Union and the Kent, Washington Chamber of Commerce with making the process easy, allowing him to focus on what he does best: making his customers look their best.

“When you help small businesses, you reduce their pressure,” John said. “The loan did help my business. It had a great impact.”

John’s story exemplifies the credit union spirit: hard work, entrepreneurial vision and financial partners who have his back. And he’s not done growing.

With St. John’s Barber Shop continuing to attract customers, John’s next goal is to modernize the business’s website, making it easier for customers to learn about services and book appointments. Thanks to paying off his loan and receiving a matching grant, that project is already underway.

John encourages more credit unions and small business owners to take advantage of the SBRL program.

“Please do more for small businesses,” he said. “It will be great!”
